Kylie looked great all day and SMOKED 4.51m.

Then she broke a pole when attempting 4.61 and cut her hand badly, having to be taken to the hospital for stitches. It was tough to watch.

She also broke a pole into 5 or 6 pieces earlier in the competition at 4.36m, went up a stick and made it.

From Kylie's Coach:
Since the end of the indoor season Kylie Hutson has battled a hamstring and quad injury. She has practiced on a very limited bases and took three weeks off from competition. She vaulted at the Drake Relays and did very well finishing behind two Olympians. The following week she jumped an outdoor season best in the rain at her last home track meet of her Indiana State career. Last night she jumped very well at the Billy Hayes Invitational at IU. She jumped three season bests, 4.36, 4,42, and 4.51. She took the bar up to the collegiate record 4.61 and had two fairly good attempts, on the last attempt the pole broke and Kylie cut her bottom hand very deep. The IU medical staff took great care of her and went to the ER and received stitches both on the inside and the outside of her hand. At this point until the hand can be examined further this coming week, she will remain questionable for the rest of the season. She will be seeing one of the best hand surgeons in the US Monday morning in Indianapolis.

Like Jeff said she smoked 4.51! And I garuntee she was about to smoke 4.61... I have never seen her swing that fast except for on her 4.51 make. Really a shame to see that happen to a class act vaulter on a day she was making history!

She was kind enough to allow me to be a Facebook friend. Here's photo of the break from there. Besides being VERY talented, that is one TOUGH girl!! Bubba

How did the cut occur? It doesn't look like there was a break in the hand hold area of the pole. I've had a sore hand from breaking a pole as have a couple of my vaulters. I've always assumed this was from the sudden release of all of the energy stored in the pole, but I've never heard of a deep cut like this one.

The energy from the break can bust the skin open. Same thing happened to Jessie Gallaher a few years ago.

yeah, ive heard some coaches say the vibration actually can just rip the webbing too. Its not a lot of fun. In 2002 I had a similar break the week before junior nationals. 7 internal stitches, and 19 external. Tear continued around to the backside. I dont have many pics but this was 6 weeks later for me. The weirdest part was that a few minutes after the pole broke, every one of my fingernails was filled with blood.

Ive heard of jessie doing this as becca mentioned, spencer mcCorkel, drew bell, and chad harting apparently did it 3 or 4 times. Its def not a lot of fun. Congrats on the PR and best of luck on a speedy recovery!

This happened to a friend of mine a couple years back. I am not sure if he was the exception to the rule or not, but he had a quick return, and had really know long term effects from the injury.

Does anyone else think the pole breaks may be from the carbon weave poles? I heard that she broke 2 weaves and her teammate broke one this weekend as well. Trend?

I wouldn't be quick to blame the pole. Sounds like she was just on fire that day. Sorry about the hand but good for her!! Bubba
