Michael Young Joins Army Track And Field Coaching Staff

Young Comes to West Point Following Five-Year Stint at LSU
Oct. 20, 2005

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army head coach Jerry Quiller continued to add to his track and field coaching staff on Thursday. Quiller announced Michael Young as the newest assistant on his burgeoning staff just one week after announcing the hiring of Brandit Copper.

Young arrives at West Point following five years as a graduate assistant on the LSU track and field coaching staff, where he served under Dennis Shaver. At LSU, Young, who worked primarily with the multi-event athletes, helped lead the Tigers to six NCAA championships (four women's crowns and two men's titles).

Young earned a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology from Ohio University in 2000. He stayed at the Athens, Ohio, campus as a pole vault coach during the 2000 and 2001 seasons as he worked toward earning his master's degree in sports science. Following his time in the Buckeye state, Young landed at LSU's Baton Rouge, La., campus.

During his five-year stint at LSU, Young completed his doctoral studies in motor behavior. A published author several times over, Young has released articles on sprinting, pole vaulting and strength and conditioning.

Young's coaching career began in the Empire State. He broke into the ranks as the sprints and jumps coach at Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y., during the mid-1990s.

At Army, Young will primarily train the men's and women's pole vaulters, sprinters and multi-event athletes. He will also assist in the Black Knights' recruiting efforts.

"We are excited about adding Michael to our staff," said Army head coach Jerry Quiller. "I believe he is a good fit for the Army track and field program."
