The scoresheet for the men's pole vault says:

DELAYED ‐ Resumes at 2pm

Why on earth would an indoor pole vault competition be delayed?

Boy Facebook is such a great resource... I hear the box cracked in two during the men's vault! So now the men are delayed and the college women are jumping tomorrow!

Oh they must have combined the two women's competitions. Hopefully they make some adjustments to the height progression as well.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Katie Stripling tied the school record in the pole vault for Arkansas Razorback women’s track and field on day two of the Tyson Invitational.

An event that started at 9:30 a.m. and finished roughly around 2 p.m., Stripling cleared 14-3.25 to win the event and tie April Steiner Bennett’s school record of 14-3.25 set in 2003.

"This is awesome, especially coming back from no-heighting last night, and to do this today, it feels pretty good," Stripling said. "I was tired but I definitely wanted to come back (and jump this morning). As soon as I got out last night, I knew I wanted to come jump in the morning. I felt a lot of pressure last night, because of the elite vaulters, and I let that get to me a little bit."

"Today, this is the crowd I’m used to jumping with," Stripling said. "It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I can actually jump those bars and to see how much higher I can get. It was actually a better warm-up last night. We had to sit around a lot before we had the chance to go, because of the large group of vaulters, but it all came together in the end."

Stripling’s clearance of 14-3.25 is a season and personal best, extends her SEC lead and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA.

"It was a good five hours, and then the hour and a half of warm up but it was a good day," assistant coach Bryan Compton said. "Last night she was actually jumping better in warm-ups than she was today. Last night, we didn’t have low enough bars to get her mistakes ironed out, then the bar went up especially with the crowd and everything."

"Today’s more of our comfort zone on the college level, so she felt right at home, instead of jumping against a gold medalist and silver medalist," Compton said. "As soon as we got that auto out of the way a couple weeks ago, you get to go back and work on some things that you think is going to help you down the road, see how they adapt to it, like grip height, just a little bit harder training, and it’s paying off."

Also in the pole vault, sophomore Tara Diebold improved her NCAA provisional mark with a personal best. She cleared 13-7.25 to finish fifth and she currently ranks 12th in the NCAA and third in the SEC.

Because of a facility issue on Friday, the women’s college and championship flights of the vault were combined and started competition at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Stripling vaults to the top of Arkansas' indoor list

FAYETTEVILLE - Katie Stripling is still new to pole vaulting, but she's an old pro at taking advantage of second chances.

Stripling cleared 14 feet, 1

3 /4 inches Saturday to tie the Arkansas indoor record at the Tyson Invitational in Tyson Track Center. Stripling made up for her poor showing in the pole vault competition Friday night, when she failed to clear a height while competing against 2008 Olympic silver medalist Jenn Stuczynski and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila.

Last outdoor season, Stripling got into the NCAA Championships on a rule technicality after failing to finish in the top eight at regionals. At nationals, Stripling finished third.

On Saturday, Stripling's third attempt tied the school record held by Olympian April Steiner Bennett, who was in attendance. The two vaulters often train together.

"It's awesome, especially after coming back from no-heighting," said Stripling, a junior from Jonesboro. "I was tired, but I really wanted to come back. I wanted to see if I could not no-height."

Stripling had a long day before she even got to compete Saturday afternoon. Thirty-nine vaulters entered the event, which meant

Stripling had to wait several

hours for her chance.

Only seven vaulters cleared

higher than 13 feet, and Stripling

didn't make her first attempt until

1 it was 12-9/2. Stripling cleared that

height and four more before

missing her first two attempts

1 at 14-3/4.

Stripling missed all three of

1 her attempts at 14-5/4. She finished

vaulting about six hours after she

first warmed up.

Arkansas assistant Bryan Compton, who coaches the vaulters, told Stripling that Friday's no-height performance wasn't anything to worry about. Stripling had already earned an automatic berth in the NCAA

1 Indoor meet after clearing 13-11/4 earlier this year.

"This whole thing is a learning experience for her," Compton said of Stripling, who didn't take up the sport seriously until she arrived at Arkansas. "She'll learn how to jump with Jenn and Stacy. She's learning on the fly right now. She's catching on."

Stripling set the outdoor record last year - surpassing Steiner Bennett that time, as well - when she cleared 14-2 at the John McDonnell Invitational. Steiner Bennett said she was happy for Stripling.

"Katie's a tough little cookie," Steiner Bennett said.

Arkansas junior Tara Diebold

1

cleared 13-7 /4 to finish fifth in the pole vault. The height is a personal best for Diebold and a provisional qualifying mark for nationals.

Compton said Diebold's mark should be good enough to get her into the national meet, where she would join automatic qualifiers Stripling and freshman Tina Sutej.
