University of Mary pole-vaulter Colleen Meas has charged into the Northern Sun and national rankings.
The freshman from Camano Island, Wash., recorded a provisional mark for the NCAA national meet. She vaulted 12-5½ last weekend at the Bison Open, just missing a school record.
"We knew she was good, but we didn't anticipate that this early,"U-Mary coach Mike Thorson said. "If she can get her technique down, she will be pretty darn good."
Meas' mark gives her the sixth-best vault in the nation. It also gives her the fourth best vault in the NSIC. She trails two national champions.
That just shows how dominant the Northern Sun is in indoor track and field, especially with MSU-Mankato in the conference.
"If we had the (NSIC)meet today, Mankato would probably double up the second score,"Thorson said. "From a team standpoint, we're not sitting where we want to be. At least we have some individuals who have been bright spots for us."
