Oh NCAA East Region, I am sure all of the pole vaulters in this region will miss you terribly when this system disappears.

Just remember that as low as the NCAA East vaulters are compared to the other region, the East sprinters tend to be that much better than other regions, so in the big picture it balances out.

I have to say, although the east region jumps may be lower in comparison to other regions, I have to give these girls credit. They jumped in some tough conditions, which many have had to deal with the entire outdoor season. The east region is an area where warm weather and tailwinds do not frequently make an appearance. I would also venture as far as saying many of these girls are some of the most talented pole vaulters in the country. If you look at the past national championships I would guarantee that there are always a good number of these girls that end up making finals. They are tough competitors who compete in a very difficult outdoor season.

Congrats to all the east region qualifiers and good luck at nationals. Good job girls.

I second Hunter's statement. Serious headwinds that were on and off all day came strong and consistent at 4.11.

The headwinds at regionals were not the first we have had this year. Likely not to happen in Arkansas, but oh, how I think the other 3 regions would miss tailwinds so terribly if it did.

Also it took nearly 4 hours for the first 3 bars alone.... With 78% humidity. That took allot out of them.

The weather varies from year to year in each region. You can't make a valid argument that the East Region always has the worst weather.

And these girls all jumped well at the regional meet. 4 of them jumped season/lifetime bests. Yes, some of them have the potential to jump higher. There are some extremely talented athletes and some outstanding coaches in this region, but compared to the other regions, it is weaker this year on the women's side. It's very obvious when you look at the list of accepted athletes, the East Region women make up the bottom 5.

I think the argument for the weather plays more of a factor if you look at trends over the season rather than the meet alone.

Of the meets I went to with our team this year, we had head winds, rain, and general garbage at all but Sea Rays (although I didn't go with the team to ACCs in Miami but its hard to imagine the weather there being too bad.

And if you look at people that get to train in california and texas that get good weather 95 percent of the time, there is a definite advantage, and a higher probability of jumping higher more often.

On the day however its all about survival. In 2005 Tommy Skipper, Yoo Kim, and Paul Gensic all no heighted at regionals due to some crazy storm out west. And then the first round of prelims at Sacramento it poured on us, and i think guys from the east made up more than their fair share of finalists, and 3 of them finished as all americans.

So while I do believe weather has a large factor in it, the simple fact is that this year the east is the weakest on the womens side. Simply take a look at the results from indoors. Only one girl at indoor NCAAs was from theoretical east indoor region. However on behalf on my team again I feel that there was a lot of bad luck. We have 3 girls all with PRs over 4.13 that just have had some bad luck.. Just wait til next year.. East will be stronger

The other thing to keep in mind is that the strength in the regions shifts from year to year. Go back three years and the East women finished 1st, 4th, and 6th at the national meet. Go back two years and the mideast is a weak region... now it is strong. With over 100 schools in the East Region it is just a matter of time (Regional meet or not) before the East gets strong again.
