So if O'Connor beat Quinn in the jumpoff, isn't O'Connor 5th and Quinn 6th?

And didn't O'Connor make 5.36 (17-7) in the jumpoff? If so, shouldn't that be the height shown above?

The Huskies website ... http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/c-track/recaps/053009aab.html ...
... reports that O'Connor cleared a new lifetime PR of 17-7 in the jumpoff ...

Also in the men's vault, senior Jared O'Connor won a jump-off for the fifth and final auto spot, although he was certain of gaining an at-large bid even had he placed sixth. He and UCLA's Johny Quinn went one-on-one at 17-7, and O'Connor cleared the new lifetime-best on his first try, while Quinn knocked the bar down. Unfortunately, junior Ryan Vu looks to be out of the running as he placed 13th overall after an suffering an ankle injury that kept him from making his last allowed attempt. Vu also had a pole snap on him on an earlier attempt.

Which is correct?

the jumpoff was run as a seperate event to determine the 5 qualifiers. the original competition marks stand although Jared does get credit for 17'7' since it was still during competition

A jump-off for determining a qualifying spot does not affect the actual placing or team scoring in the meet, it is just an administrative jump-off.

The mark from the jump-off is not included in the regular results the way it would be if it had been a jump-off for first.

I am not sure if staticians accept marks from administrative jump-offs for record keeping purposes, they are fairly rare, and even more rare for such a mark to be a personal best.

A good example is USAs two years ago, Jillian and someone else had to jump-off for the qualifying spot. They both end up clearing a few heights, and Jill actually cleared a higher bar than the winner (Jenn Stuczynski) but the mark isn't listed as her result because it was just an administrative jump-off.

OK, thanks for clarifying the jumpoff rules ... which make sense.

But that still doesn't explain why Jared only got credit for 17-3 during the jumpoff. He won it at 17-7!

Should this not read 5.36m 17-07.00?

Pat called me today and told me that Ryan's ankle is only a slight sprain. He had a bit of bad luck yesterday ... after breaking his pole at 5.06, he moved up a pole, stalled out (due to the heavier flex), and landed "safely" in the pit, but with his weight all on his ankles. He should be healthy in time for the NCAA if one of the other 12 qualifiers don't go.

On a personal note ... as a proud Huskie and a proud Canadian ... I offer Ryan my HUGE congratulations! His 5.35 on May 2nd was a new PR ... and ranks him 11th All-Time for Canadians!

I am not sure if you fully understand how the qualifying works. The top 5 in each region automatically go. Places 6-12 are placed in an at-large pool, along with places 6-12 from the other 3 regions. Then they are ranked in order of season best and picked in that order. The number picked will vary depending on what happens in other events. A set number of athletes go to the whole meet. The more athletes who have qualified in multiple events, the more at-large people get picked across the board.

Ryan placed 13th and is not in the at-large pool. The only way he will get in is if Pat calls up one of the coaches of an athlete who has a mark that is low enough on the list and convinces them to scratch their athlete from the at-large pool.

So it's not an issue of one of the 12 athletes not going, because not all 12 athletes in front of him get to go anyway. It's an issue of who can politic better. Someone scratching means Ryan probably gets picked as an at-large athlete which means someone who performed better at regionals won't get picked.
