College Coaching Changes 2009-2010

New postby rainbowgirl28 » Fri Jul 24, 2009 11:38 am

I hear rumors of some big shakeups in the southeast section of this country, but I am not sure which ones are done deals and what is still up in the air, so I'll leave it up to others to post about them...

Don D Hood out at Abilene Christian, going to coach high school. That one has been posted in this forum already.

http://www.emporiagazette.com/news/2009 ... eld_staff/ - Erin Wessley from Culver-Stockton to Emporia State.

Jon Heath from MSU-Moorhead to Oklahoma has also been mentioned on this site.

http://www.troymessenger.com/news/2009/ ... r-coaches/ - Brad Taracuk to Troy

What else?

UNC announced their new hire, Josh Langley from Clemson.

I heard that Spencer Frame was looking into opening an indoor facility in NC and doing private coaching.

Josh Langley and Peter Watson have joined the University of North Carolina coaching staff.
July 16, 2009

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Josh Langley, a former assistant track and field coach at Clemson, and Peter Watson, a former head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Auburn, have joined the University of North Carolina coaching staff, head coach Dennis Craddock announced today.

Langley will coach the pole vault and throwing events. Watson will be the head coach of the cross country programs and be an assistant track coach for distance events.

"We are quite pleased to welcome Josh and Peter to the Carolina athletic family," says Craddock, who will be coaching in his 25th season in Chapel Hill in 2009-10. "I watched Josh up close the last few years at Clemson both at meets and on the recruiting trail and was very impressed with his work. He will continue the strong tradition we have in the vault and throws.

"Peter has a lot of experience coaching cross country and distance running on the national level. We want to get our cross country program back among the top schools in the country and Peter has the experience and know-how to get that done."

Langley coached at Clemson the past three years. In 2007 and 2008 he coached the men's field events and multi-event athletes. Last year, he coached men's and women's pole vault and throws and men's multi-events. He also coached for three years at Gardner-Webb (2004-06). He is a 2003 graduate of Western Carolina and began his coaching career with the Catamounts. He was an outstanding javelin thrower at WCU and was a member of two Southern Conference championship teams in 1999.

At Clemson, he helped Mitch Greeley to a second-place finish in the pole vault at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships, the Tigers' best individual finish indoors ever by a field athlete. Greeley later qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Langley also helped Miller Moss qualify for the 2009 NCAA Championships in the decathlon; Nicole Lomnicka was ranked No. 7 in the nation last year in the hammer; and his athletes earned All-America honors in the heptathlon and triple jump.

Langley coached 49 all-conference selections and five regional qualifiers in his three seasons at Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs won the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference men's outdoor title. He is married to the former Layna Stoetzel, a former volleyball player at Western Carolina.

Cincinnati had a job posting for a pole vault coach, I don't know if they filled that yet. http://www.ustfccca.org/jobs/assistant- ... ld-coach-4

Clemson has not announced who will replace Langley.

No word on who will replace Jon Heath at MSU-Moorhead.

Did Tennessee retain their pole vault coach(es)? Or are they hoping for someone new? Maybe LoJo returning to his alma mater?

http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jul ... man-women/

KNOXVILLE -- University of Tennessee Director of Track & Field and Cross Country J.J. Clark announced his first new staff hire Friday, selecting Tulane’s Heather Van Norman as the Big Orange’s assistant coach for women’s sprints and hurdles. He also confirmed the retention of three full-time assistant coaches for his 2009-10 men’s and women’s teams.

Van Norman, who was head coach of the Green Wave men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs during a tumultuous period caused by the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, replaces Pauline Davis-Thompson, who resigned on June 19 after two years at UT. Additionally, long-time men’s cross country/distance coach George Watts has been promoted to associate head coach and will handle those same responsibilities along with aiding Clark with management of the program. Assistant Norbert Elliott will continue in his role of directing men’s sprints, while Lady Vol throws coach John Frazier will now assume duties for both the women and men as he did previously at Arizona. Clark expects to fill the final assistant position in the coming weeks.

Don't really see that happening. He has like 15 vaulters at South Carolina, and he just brought Elliot over this past year.

Hey DJ,
You have heard correctly. Is rainbowgirl trying to put me out of a job or something  Whats a guy gotta do around here? I plan to continue to work as the men's coach and Dave as the women's coach. We are both volunteers so its really not an issue of coaching slots. Two guys from our group have chosen to move on but we remain with 3 strong vaulters and one new guy. Ayers (5.18m) will leave DecaU to compete for the University of Georgia in the deca and pv. Michael Seaman (5.05) will leave to compete for Samford. Our training group will be a little smaller this year but this gives us a chance to go out and find a couple of really strong prospects for next year. I am very exciting about having even more input into the training program and periodization. I anticiapte a new birth of excitement with the Tennessee vaulters.

p.s. = Hire Tom Pappas.
