chances of being able to walk on to a team ??

Unread postby DDawg » Sun Apr 25, 2004 5:50 pm

hey - i was just wondering if any college coaches might be willing to let me walk onto their teams. i had a good sophomore year - but was unable to jump last year and this year because of an injury. but now im ok. so its been about a year and a half since i've actually jumped, but i've maintained my strength. im pretty sure that im headed to university of miami next year, but im still debating on where i should send my deposit- so what are the chances of any college coaches giving me another chance as a walk on? im a girl and i jumped 11'0 ft before i hurt myself ? how long do you think it will take me to get it back?

You should definitely talk to the coach at the schools you are interested in. Plenty of schools would let you walk on, but I don't know if Miami is one of them.

yea - thats what i was thinking - cuz miami's like this big D1 and everything - maybe i should go to FAU or some other smaller school in Florida or anywhere else where they'd help me out for a couple years while i get back in the air - but then again i was soo excited to get into miami so i dont know that i want to sacrifice that for something thats soo unsure - since i havent pole vaulted in like a year and a half - i dont know i guess i have a lot of thinking to do

Miami would let you walk on i think. Coach Falk doesnt have any girls if I recall correctly. The girls and guys team at Miami each only have one scholarship, so pretty much everyone there is a walk-on. Give it a shot. 11 feet aint bad in the Big East for girls. Well, when you would get there we're gonna be ACC with them, thats when you are gonna need some more height. Go for it, its a good school and track program.

there are many different levels of college competition. JC, D3, D2, D1, NAIA, find a school that has pole vaulting in your area, and talk with the coaches. I would recomend having a 'resume' of what you have done available, not just in the vault, but in school and other things, alot of coaches look at the character of the athlete when they are thinking of having them on their team, walk on or recruited.

If you are ever thinking about checking out a new area. Idaho State University takes walk ons and Dave Neilson is an awesome coach.
