Q & A with Pole Vaulter Jeff Coover
Sept. 28, 2005
Jeff Coover is a freshman pole vaulter on the Indiana track and field team. Coover attended La Jolla High School in La Jolla, Calif., where he was a two-time San Diego County finals winner. He also placed second at the 2005 California State Games, captured a silver medal at the Golden West Invitational and finished seventh at the 2005 USATF Junior Nationals. In addition, Coover was tabbed the 2005 Field Event Athlete of the Year from the San Diego County Track Officials Association. Coover recently sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to discuss his first month with the Hoosiers.
Describe your transition to Indiana:
Things have been very different than what I expected. It's tough to balance school and practice, but then again it's kind of fun, knowing that you have something to dedicate yourself to every day.
What are some of your personal goals this season?
I'd like to place at Big Tens and compete at Nationals. As far as a vaulting goal, I'd like to definitely hit the 17 foot barrier. 17-4 would be awesome.
How different are practices with IU compared to your high school?
They are much more focused, and nobody complains about hard workouts because everyone is here for the same reason, to compete at a national level.
Why did you choose to come to Indiana?
I knew that IU could offer a lot more as far as coaching and facilities than many of the other schools that I visited. Also, all the guys on the team and the staff are really cool.
What has been the biggest adjustment been to college life?
It's hard for me to force myself to study when I have so many other things that I could be doing. Also, it's different to be part of a collegiate track team, since I'm not used to this kind of commitment, but I love it.
Overall, how does it feel to be a part of the IU track team?
It feels really cool to be out there with all these guys who I know are great athletes. It feels good to be able to work out with such a good force of athletes and coaches and know that I am improving and everything that's happening is to my benefit.

As a Purdue alum, its my sworn duty to run down IU every chance I get. I'll bad mouth IU everyday until they put me in the ground.

// of course this is all in fun. I love IU's campus and have many a hazy, but fond memory from weekends spent there
