When the USA Gymnastics Tumbling and Trampoline national competition takes place in Houston on July 27 and 28, one competitor who always makes an impact will be absent because of her inability to qualify at the regional competition June 4.

Not because she took a bad hop, or because she didn´t make the cut. No, Lauren Hill has a different reason why she won´t be there.

It´s bright pink and collecting a respectable amount of graffiti as it stays securely on the right foot, giving her broken ankle time to heal.

Hill, 13, will miss out on the national competition because of a freak accident that happened a few weeks ago.

While playing for the Lady Hurricanes in the 13-15-year-old division of the Plainview Optimist Softball League, Hill was making a routine slide into home plate in the second inning of the first game of the season. She made a similar move the inning before, only this time something went wrong.

Her cleated shoes caught on the side of home plate and there was a slight pop.
