Cowley to host pole vault camp June 10-12

Mark Phillips, Cowley County Community College head track and field coach, will be conducting a pole vault camp June 10-12 at the Tiger Track and Field Facility.

The pole vault clinic is designed to help beginning as well as experienced vaulters to learn to vault safely and correctly using technique drills and routines. Anyone in sixth grade or older can take part in the camp.

Participants will be taught proper pole carry, run mechanics, plant timing, and take-off and bar clearance. There will be an emphasis on approach, plant and take-off. Pole selection and proper training will be discussed, and video analysis will be used to help the participants learn.

The clinic will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. on June 10 and 11, with a lunch break from noon to 1. Participants can bring their lunch or go to lunch with their parent or guardian. The clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on June 12.

Pre-registration may be completed any time prior to June 7. A registration form can be found at cowleytigers.com. The pre-registration cost of the clinic is $50. Registration in person can be done June 10 from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Cowley College track. The cost of registration on June 10 is $60. Each participant who pre-registers will receive a T-shirt, while late registrants will receive a T-shirt on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants should wear comfortable workout type clothing and bring a towel, water bottle, sunscreen, and a lunch if there will be no way of going to lunch.

Coach Phillips, Cowley College and Vault-USA will provide a limited number of poles. Participants should bring their own poles if they have them.

Vault USA will be hosting the Regional Pole Vault Meet June 12 at 1 p.m. at the Tiger Track and Field Facility. Participants of the pole vault camp are invited to compete in the meet. There will be a $15 entry fee, and if participants are interested in competing in the Vault-USA Kansas Circuit, they can visit the Vault-USA web site for more information at www.vault-usa.com.
