A famous study was performed by the US Army about 15 years ago on 10,000 new recruits. The conclusion was that x-rays, MRI's and cat scans cannot be used to determine the cause of back pain, unless you have a tumor or were in an accident ( fracture). Almost every one at some time in their will have back pain and 99 percent of the time it goes away in 6 months.
Get another opinion.

GeorgeN is right. The problem with Xrays and MRI’s is that they take a snapshot in a single instant in time of a structure at rest that is designed to be in motion. As sophisticated and impressive as it is, the technology just does not give doctors enough information to be exact. I would be very reluctant to let anyone cut on me unless it was the absolute last resort. I have only seen one back surgery that actually helped the problem. Most have made things worse, or caused other problems.

There is a general impression that muscles and joints are simple and other internal organs are complicated. The truth is that the skeletal and muscular systems are unbelievably complex and subject to all kinds of ambiguity when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. There is no way to know if what a doctor sees on a film is not something that has been there for years. It may have nothing to do with your pole vaulting. There is even some evidence that a lot of back pain is brought on by mental stress. Be very careful, and follow common sense first. Rest, let things have time to heal. Definitely get more than one opinion.

when I got an xray on my back they didn't catch that i had popped a disc. they didn't see that untill i went to physical theropy. Xrays can only do so much.
