Polish indoor champs

Unread postby ilios » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:26 am

Spala, Poland - Tomasz Majewski’s 20.47m in the Shot Put and Monika Pyrek’s 4.60m in the Pole Vault were two of the highlights during the Polish Indoor Championships, which took place on 21 and 22 February in Spala.

No Turin for Pyrek

Monika Pyrek, like Majewski, announced she would miss the European Indoor Championships despite being in good form this winter. Her mind appears to be unchanged after winning another national title on Sunday. With Anna Rogowska missing from the competition, two attempts was all it took for Pyrek to secure the win, as she cleared 4.30 and 4.50 on her first attempts. She had one more first-time clearance at 4.60 before attacking a new national record height of 4.81, which proved too high on this occasion. Joanna Piwowarska took the second place with 4.40 and will be joining Rogowska on the national team for Turin.

The men’s Pole Vault competition also ended with a good result, although an unexpected one. The 20-year-old Lukasz Michalski, a European junior medallist from 2007, had a sensational series of six first-time clearances, ending with successive personal bests of 5.55, 5.60 and 5.66, the latter a national under-23 record. With this performance, Michalski secured himself a ticket to Turin. Another young vaulter, 21-year-old Mateusz Didenkow, also improved significantly to take the second place with 5.50.
