pole vault culture

Unread postby n3p2a » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:11 am

I am an ex highschool pole-vaulter currently a freshman in college. I'm taking a general speech class right now as part of my gen eds and my first speech is about the culture of pole vault. I was just looking for any information or ideas anyone has to offer about the sports unique culture. Thanks

we are strange strange people. I would say go to a meet and watch the way vaulters interact with people, even their competition. ive never seen the same type of attitudes. Ive lent poles to people who have beet me with them. I think for the most part vaulters just wanna jump high and have fun doing so. Not really worried with other competitors except for one or 2 meets a year.

when at a meet all vaulters will help the others out for the most part and get to know everyone...where all just one big family pretty much. Pole vaulters are also the stupidest people ever after almost killing ourselves we have the balls to go again so its a mixture of currage and stupidity

what kind of reinforecement do you need?

haha...just thinking about going Jane Goodall and shooting some footage of your subjects "interacting" at a meet

Pole vaulters are definitely a unique group. At my practice session at Reno one of the coaches said that the reason that we all are obsessed with vaulting is because we all have that dream of flying...which is so true (that's what I loved so much about tumbling when I did gymnastics). In general, everyone's willing to share poles, tape, advice, drills, set-ups, tents, etc. during meets and practices with people from other schools/teams...and that is what I love so much about pv: everyone breaking down team/school boundaries to help one another get just a little bit closer to touching the sky...and of course have fun. I think that it's also one of the few events that people really, and I mean really, get obsessed with. Your evidence for that is this board, Reno, and the dedicated bands of people who jump year round and can be found in the stands and helping on the field from the beginning of a meet until after everyone else has finished (except for pv).

Odds are that if you see someone wearing pajama pants at a track meet they are in fact a pole vaulter (I don't wear them, but hey). I do think having a pair is a prerequisite or something.
