Any trainers in the house? My back is acting up...

Unread postby izzystikchik » Wed Dec 28, 2005 11:42 am

Hi all,

I have a back issue. It started back in September. Whenever i sprinted hard, my lower back would start to get tight. In highschool i was never a sprinter so i supposed i wasn't used to it. Anyway, then after practice it would continue to hurt. I would ice and heat. Then after awhile it went away.

Just for the record, i don't take off under, and i stretch and warm up a good deal before i do anything. Although i must admit i'm not very flexible in the hamstrings

Then until recently I came back to my former highschool to vault over winter break. I vaulted hard 3 days in a row and of those three days I lifted twice, then on the fourth day i decided to do some sprinting. I felt my back get tight again, and it felt like a pinch.

Now its a whole week later, and i'm still feeling it, its not as intense, but its affecting my vault! I run like i'm hurting!

Its concentrated on my lower left back, right next to my spine and right above the back of my hip bone. Again all on the left side.

I spoke w/ my hs coach about it and he says its not a good thing that the pain is so close to a bone. My dad is scaring me by saying this might be a disc/spinal issue....I hope not, i have an important meet coming up in early January....I'm going to see a doctor today and then i'm going to a massage therapy session this afternoon..

Ideas? Is this a sprain or something else? Appreciated... :(

out of interest do you do either clean sor jump squats with a bar across you shoulders when you lift?

I ask purely because I had a bad back which was triggered by poor technique in the cleans and the impact of the catch causing compression issues in my lower back. This didn't stop me lifting but flared up really painful in exactly the place you describe whenever I vaulted and at its worst when i ran.

Aim high, then at least if you miss you won't shoot yourself in the foot.

I went to the doc's and he checked out my back.

Thank God there aren't any swellings or irregularities along my spine, so he really considered it a really bad strain. This might be due to inbalance of lifting weights, tightness in hamstrings or just not used to intense sprinting.

To answer your question about if i do any lifting that might cause this, i'm not sure, We do really serious leg presses that killed my legs now and then, but i'm not sure if that is the cause of my bad back..
