Former Italian pole vault world champion Giuseppe Gibilisco is threatening to pull out of the Beijing Games because coach Vitaly Petrov is spending too much time with women’s world and Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva.
"At this moment I’m behind in my preparation," Gibilisco told an Italian newspaper. "I don’t want to go to Beijing just to make up the numbers."

Giuseppe Gibilisco of Italy mulls pole vault pullout at Olympics due to coach problems

2008-07-29 13:26:06 -

ROME (AP) - Former pole vault world champion Giuseppe Gibilisco is considering pulling out of the Beijing Games because he believes his coach is focusing too much on reigning woman's Olympic champion, Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia.
Gibilisco, who was cleared from doping allegations in May, told an Italian sports daily that his already delayed

training was suffering as coach Vitaly Petrov traveled with Isinbayeva to meets in Stockholm, London and Monte Carlo.
«I could give up the Olympics,» Gibilisco said in Tuesday's edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. «We were working together with Isinbayeva, I didn't expect Petrov to leave and not come back.
Gibilisco, who won gold at the 2003 world championships, was banned for two years by the Italian Athletics Federation for allegedly having contact with a doctor at the center of a four-year investigation into claims he supplied drugs to athletes.
But the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the suspension in May, and Gibilisco has said he wants to compete in Beijing after having won bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

«If I have to go and defend the Athens bronze, or even improve that result, I need to be in the right form,» the Italian said. «At the moment, I am behind in my preparation.

"Now I have asked Italy coach Nicola Silvaggi to find a solution as the Games are soon here and I have even thought of pulling out. At this moment I'm behind in my preparation. I don't want to go to Beijing just to make up the numbers."

Gibilisco won gold at the 2003 world championships in Paris.

So when did Gibilisco get back with Petrov? I thought he'd decided to go his own separate way last year.

He got back with Petrov in May, when his suspention was overturned. It is in Italian but... http://archiviostorico.gazzetta.it/2008 ... 5022.shtml They speak about supervision (I hope that this is not a false friend word) by Petrov on his training.
But I am very surprised of his jealousy, since I think that it is obvious that Petrov follows Yelena in her competitions instead of being in Formia with Gibilisco. On the other hand, I think that his trainer is the Italian Federation trainer of pole vault, who works only with him I think at the moment.
