What would this be? If it was volzing they should have just flagged that particular jump as a miss.
I am sure his coach wasn't down there tapping him.
Was he watching video or talking on a cell phone?

In my day, it was technically illegal for a coach to shout instructions to a vaulter - even if the coach was in the stands. To my knowledge, this was never enforced except in the Olympics, but it was a rule nonetheless.

Is that rule still in force? Could that be the reason for the DQ?

hey

kirk i don't believe the 'coaching' rule is in effect... i did get yellow carded at a meet in the 80's for coaching my high jumper.. i thought it was funny since i was "outside" the area ... but they said my jumper would get diqualified..

i had 3 simple hand signals i used with tully ... but they would card you for those if they caulght you.. untill the rule cahnged..

it may be that the athlete was using his cell phone as a camera.. or viewing a movie of his vaults between jumps...

another team may have reported it.. and he was DQ'ed after the fact..

just a thought

I worked the event and I remember this jumper but I did not know he was DQ'ed. I kept the clipboard to backup the palm pilot and we did not DQ anyone. I will try to find out what happened.

Thanks! It's kind of a big deal. He would have placed 5th and I believe was the only athlete from his school in the entire meet.

Like I said above, that would have been called a miss at the time of the jump, not after the fact.

The DQ was for watching video. Apparently some coaches turned another coach in for showing the athlete video. And was caught by the referee. I did not see this happen so I am puzzled by the whole thing. And I was never notified of the infraction. The only thing I can think is it took place after the athlete was out and it violated the electronic device rule. But I am not sure.

That's unfortunate. I bet it was a miscommunication and he thought he was viewing the video in an OK place or that it was OK because he was out. Like I said, I think he was the only athlete from his school, so he may not have gotten the lengthy debriefing that most head coaches give their team.
