Melissa Gergel of Oregon finishes tied for sixth in the pole vault

Oregon's Melissa Gergel tied for sixth in the women's pole vault Saturday in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Gergel cleared 13 feet 7 1/4.

The event is continuing, but Gergel is out of the competition.

BREAKING: ISU's Hutson wins NCAA title in pole vault

College Station, Texas — For Kylie Hutson, the third time was the charm.

The Terre Haute North graduate and Indiana State junior celebrated a national championship Saturday in the pole vault at her third NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship meet.

Hutson is the first Indiana State national champion in a field event. Aubrey Herring was the most recent winner on the track when he took the 60-meter hurdles indoor title in 2001.

The last and only other women’s national champion was Holly Hyche, who took home four indoor titles and three outdoor in 1993 and 1994.

Hutson’s jump of 4.35 meters (14-feet, 3 1/4 inches) was a personal best. The only bar Hutson missed Saturday was at 4.30 meters. She cleared every other height on the first try.

“I feel like I’m on top of the world actually. I don’t think it’s quite set in yet,” Hutson said in a phone conversation minutes before taking the award stand. “This is the most relaxed i’ve been in a national championship meet. I didn’t let anything get to me. I tried to have fun, that was the main thing, and jump high.”

Hutson’s event coach, Jeff Martin, was thrilled for his athlete.

“There’s several factors,” he said. “She had a great fall conditioning, hit the weight room real hard, the progression throughout the season was great.

“We knew she was capable of jumping very high, it was a little surprising to win it all. We didn’t even talk about it [goals]. We didn’t even talk about being All-American. The goal was clear as many bars as possible.”

Martin also credited the work of assistant pole vault coach Tony Mescall — a former ISU All-American valuter — track athletic trainer Brad Yeargin to deal with the minor injuries Hutson had as well as ISU strength and conditioning coach Dave McManus for pushing Hutson hard in the weight room.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — LSU freshman pole vaulter Rachel Laurent made history again Saturday night on the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Laurent, a Vandebilt Catholic-Houma grad who last spring became the first high school girl in Louisiana to clear 14 feet in the vault, became the first LSU female athlete to earn All-American honors in the event when she placed fifth with a clearance of 13 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

She made her first attempts at 13-3 1/2 and 13-7 1/4 before missing three times at 13-11ø. Indiana State’s Kylie Hutson won with a 14-3 1/4.

Laurent’s mark was slightly off the personal best of 14- 1/2 she established in winning the title in the Southeastern Conference indoor meet on Feb. 28, but it was historic nonetheless for the LSU program.

“It’s really exciting to be the first All-American pole vaulter at LSU. It’s a great honor,” she said.

“A lot of hard work is starting to show. Obviously, I wanted to do a little better, but we had a successful season and a successful meet.”

Laurent was the second LSU female vaulter to compete in the NCAA indoor meet, following Katelyn Rodrigue last year. Rodrigue has also qualified for two NCAA outdoor meets.

Stripling earns bronze at NCAAs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior Katie Stripling picked up a bronze finish and the 4x400-meter relay scored points as Arkansas Razorback women’s track and field finished tied for 20th with 11 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas. The Razorbacks will bring eight All-America honors back to Fayetteville.

"Things shaped up pretty well for us today," head coach Lance Harter said. "Katie (Stripling) redeemed herself after a rough SEC meet to pick up another bronze finish in the pole vault. Her and Tara (Diebold) earned All-America honors along with the 4x400-meter relay. Whitney Jones ran another great anchor leg and she shows so much promise as an All-American freshman."

Stripling, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., earned her second-straight third-place finish in the NCAA pole vault. She cleared 13-11.25 and scored six points. She earned the second All-America honor of her career including her bronze finish from the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Her clearance is tied for the third best in school history.

"It’s really exciting to get third place," Stripling said. "It was great to be jumping well again and earn another All-American honor. It was great to have three of us out there and the support of your teammates while you are competing. I feel like the leader of our jump crew but this was a great experience for Tara (Diebold) and Tina (Sutej). They learned a lot from this experience."

Sophomore Tara Diebold finished ninth in the pole vault. She cleared 13-3.5. She was among the top eight Americans and earned the first All-America honor of her career. Freshman Tina Sutej finished 12th in the event with her height of 13-3.5.
