Hips and knees
Okay, I don't want to freak anyone out here, but last night, I saw something on TV about the number of hip and knee replacements going way up these days. This got me thinking about how training for pole vault can be taxing on the body. Does anyone else out there worry about how their body will be holding up as they get older, or am I the only one getting paranoid?

omg, i thought i was the only one worried about that stuff too! i mean, ive never had a prob with hips, but knees and BACK... yah. i was thinking not to push yourself too far over your limit, but then you wont get any better! so i dont really know... maybe it would help to make sure to give yourself a proper rest period...?
well i guess we'll see what everyone else says

I guess I never really thought about it, but if you train with using the right technique (especially in the weight room) I think that you are making yourself more healthy in long run. It's when I see people that are loading up 315 on a back squat and not doing it correctly that I think they might be hurting themselves in the short--and long--run.

IF YOU DON'T USE IT YOU LOOSE IT!
So if you train correctly and don't over train I think one will be better off by vaulting and all the associated training than if you don't.
I think this is correct from my perspective being a 51 year old master vaulter that has been training and vaulting for 41 consecutive years.
Not only do I mostly feel great I know I am in a lot better physical shape than any of my fellow class mates from High School.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I think some of it is from over training and over use of all types of pain killers. The pain is there for a reason b/c there has been some type of tissue damage typically. Too many people's solution is to numb the pain and go right on engaging in the activity that causes it.
I know I did it in college every track season I would buy a 1000 count bottle of Ibuprofin and use it up. Know I'm worried about my legs and kidneys.

Wow. I would think that with Kenny Easley having played for the Seahawks you might have taken it easy on the ibuprofen . . .
